ACY2112 1/72 Boeing B50D Superfortress

The Boeing B-50 series of aircrft should have been called the SUPER SUPERFORTRESS. The relationship between the B-29 and the B-50 was similar to that of the family sedan and a hot-rod roadster. With more powerful engines and more strength from stronger aluminum alloys, the B-50 was able to fly faster, longer and carry a heavier payload.

Early in the development of the B-29 it became obvious that there were problems with the R-3350 engines which often caught fire in flight.

To remedy that fault, the engineers investigated the substitution of twin Allison V-1710 inline engines, but that solution did not yield enough power.

Finally they went to the newly developed and much more powerful R-4360 36 cylinder engines which resulted in a redesign of almost 80% from the original B-29.

The B-50D was manufactured in larger numbers than any other variant, some 222 being produced. Operational throughout the Korean War, the B-50D compiled a noteworthy record of accomplishments before being retired in favor of newer and faster aircraft.
